Over time, the battery system fail. Typically, batteries in uninterruptible power systems are not monitored at all, or only checked during routine maintenance of the entire system. Undetected and unpaired battery defects appear mainly at the most critical moment – when the input network fails, that is, exactly when the batteries are especially needed.

UPSmake only the most elementary control of batteries, and are not able to identify the failure of a particular unit, cell, or determine the unbalanced characteristics of several parallel lines of storage batteries. To ensure the reliable operation of the entire battery system, it is necessary to determine at an early stage that the main characteristics of the individual system components are exceeded.

The effectiveness of the monitoring system is proportional to the number of monitoring points and the frequency of measurements. With regular monitoring, it becomes possible to accumulate data, it is possible to carry out analysis, identify dangerous trends and generate reports for taking timely corrective measures.

Monitoring Battery System

Block (cell) voltage : Incorrect charging voltage results in loss of capacity, accelerated plate corrosion, increased gassing and reduced service life. Voltage monitoring also identifies failures such as plate-to-plate short circuits and provides a clear picture of the battery condition during discharge.

Internal resistance of the block (cell): resistance of battery system increases as it ages. A high internal resistance indicates that the storage battery cannot deliver current during discharge, that is, perform its main function. Also, the high resistance indicates possible loose connections and breaks within the battery before failure occurs. 

Since battery system degradation can occur very quickly (within a week), daily internal resistance measurement allows potential failure to be identified in advance without the need for discharge tests. Analysis of the change in this characteristic over time allows us to estimate its real service life.

Temperature: Rechargeable batteries, as a rule, should operate at temperatures not higher than +20 / +25 degrees C. Higher temperatures significantly affect plate corrosion and shorten their service life. It is generally accepted that an increase in temperature by 10 degrees will reduce the service life by 2 times.

Current: Measuring the battery system allows you to monitor the amount of energy entering the battery or load for each line. The UPS has no way of detecting unbalanced current when charging or discharging. This situation occurs with possible problems in the batteries, and may also be the result of an earth leak.

Battery system total voltage: measuring this parameter allows you to assess the correct operation of the rectifier (charger).
